My name is Nectari. I first came to Chania in 1971, nine years old, overwhelmed by family and food and the particular warmth of a city that knew exactly what it was. I have not missed a summer since.
My parents left Chania in the 1950s and built a life in Canada, but when the time came for me to be born, my mother returned to Greece. Eight months later my father brought us back. Some connections are established before you are old enough to have any say in the matter.
My professional life took me across four countries — Canada, Silicon Valley, Milan, Athens. Along the way I travelled the world, collecting experiences, collecting objects, and developing a clear sense of what makes a place worth returning to. The studios you are considering are decorated with things I brought back from those years. None of them were bought for decoration. All of them have a story.
In 2006 I bought a house in Splantzia. I restored it myself, keeping everything the building wanted to keep.
My partner Eva shares this city and this project with me. Between us we have a combined knowledge of Chania that spans decades — its restaurants, its neighbourhoods, its seasonal rhythms, its people. We know where locals eat, which beaches are worth the drive, which roads to avoid in August, and which Saturday morning at the farmers market on Minios Street will change how you think about food.
Oscar, the family dog, handles introductions.
